  • Prepare Your Home for Winter

    Thumbnail Placeholder

Your heating unit plays the biggest role in keeping you warm and comfortable during the winter. So now is the time to prepare your heating unit for operation. It’s a good idea to have an HVAC technician perform maintenance on your heating unit. They’ll make sure everything is working properly and also make certain your unit is not introducing carbon monoxide into your home. They’ll also test it to make certain it will come on and produce heat the first time you require it. It’s better to know that now than on the same day 100 other people discover that their heating units aren’t working and request a service call.

In addition to having your heating unit checked over, there are a number of other things you can do to help keep your home warm and save money this winter.

    1. Install a new filter for your heating unit.
    2. Check all doors and windows for leaks and repair with caulk or weather stripping.
    3. Install storm windows or window plastic.
    4. Install thermal curtains.
    5. Remove and store window air-conditioners.
    6. Install gaskets on all electric outlets on outside walls.
    7. Wrap water pipes in unheated spaces.
    8. Close foundation vents.
    9. Make certain outside dryer vent seals properly.
    10. Install a programmable thermostat and program it to lower the house temperature at night and when the house is empty.
    11. Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
    12. Using low speed, set ceiling fans to blow hot air down.
    13. Make sure attic access door is sealed and insulated.
    14. Install diverters on floor registers to direct heated air towards the inside of the room.
    15. Keep fireplace dampers closed when not in use.
    16. Add extra ceiling insulation in your attic.
    17. Dress warmly but comfortably.

Christian County to Receive Investment in Digital Infrastructure

A joint effort between Pennyrile Electric and Hopkinsville Electric System will make energynet high speed fiber internet widely available in Christian County over the next five years. Christian County Fiscal Court voted unanimously to commit $13 million dollars of Federal and State grants toward the estimated $35 million dollar project.  The digital infrastructure investment will bring energynet high speed fiber internet service to homes throughout Christian County.

President & CEO of Pennyrile Electric, Alan Gates says “This is a first step in a much larger plan to bring high-speed internet access to all our members similar to the way Pennyrile Electric brought rural electricity to its members 84 years ago”.  Gates continues, “The monies allocated through this joint effort with Christian County Fiscal Court allow Pennyrile Electric to move forward with the project, while preserving a business model that protects the integrity of the electric side of our business”.

General Manager of Hopkinsville Electric System & energynet, Jeff Hurd says, “We’ve seen the way we consume information and how we communicate change drastically.  With the emergence of smart phones, tablets, computer-powered everything, the technological infrastructure that was once a luxury is now a necessity.  We commend Christian County Fiscal Court for recognizing the need and investing in Christian County.”

Those interested in receiving updates and tracking progress on the infrastructure build out should fill out a survey on goenergynet.com.  Communication and service update alerts will be sent to those who have filled out a survey on goenergynet.com as this historic investment progresses.

Three packages are offered for energynet customers; the 200 mbps home package is offered at $59.95/month, the 500 mbps gamer edition package is offered at $79.95/month and the full speed service with speeds up to 1 gigabit is offered at $99.95/month.  Each energynet package includes whole-home wifi and 24/7 local support with unlimited data usage and no contracts.  Those interested in learning more about fiber may visit goenergynet.com.
