You’re committed to doing your part to lessen your impact on the environment. You’ve switched to LED light bulbs and upgraded to high-efficiency appliances. You do your best to use electricity wisely. You really wish you could put solar panels on your roof, but either the cost is prohibitive, or your house is not properly oriented to take best advantage of the sun. So what is left  for you to do to go more “Green”?

The answer is easy. Participate in TVA’s Green Switch program. TVA realizes that many people would like to take a more active role in insuring that more and more electricity is generated from renewable sources (solar, wind, biomass). But the costs of deploying renewable generation resources may be out of reach for many people. The Green Switch program gives customers the opportunity to insure that TVA generates all or a portion of their home’s electricity from renewable resources.

The Green Switch program sells “blocks” of green energy. But the block isn’t actually electricity. Rather, it represents a commitment from TVA that 200 kilowatt-hours of electricity is produced by renewable resources. Each block costs $2.00. So, for a customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month, to insure that 100% of their energy was created using renewable resources, the customer could pay an additional $10 on their bill (1,000 kWh / 200 kWh per block = 5 Green Switch blocks x $2 per block = $10). However, the actual number of blocks purchased is completely up to the customer. Once the number of blocks to be purchased is determined, the amount is added onto your monthly HES electric bill. There is no obligation, so participation in Green Switch can be cancelled at any time.

Purchasing blocks of Green Switch does not reduce or offset the charges for your electricity consumption on your HES bill. All Green Switch contributions are forwarded directly to TVA for the purchase of energy from renewable resources.
